The Kirtan Kriya is a structured form of meditation that combines vocalization with hand gestures. During the meditation, you’ll repeat the syllables “saa,” “taa,” “naa,” and “maa” over and over again while touching a different finger to your thumb. This little bit of movement helps you stay present. And the syllables are drawn from the Sanskrit mantra “sat nam,” which means “true identity.”

While I’m including the instructions for performing Kirtan Kriya here, I find the easiest way to do it is to follow along with a YouTube video—I’ve included a link to my favorite in the Resources section.

Sit in a comfortable position with your spine tall and your hands resting in your lap.

Close your eyes.

As you sing “saa,” bring the index finger of each hand to touch your thumbs.

As you sing “taa,” touch your middle fingers to your thumbs.

As you sing “naa,” touch your ring fingers to your thumbs.

As you sing “maa,” bring your pinkies to your thumbs. All the while, imagine the sound flowing in through the very top of your head and moving out through the middle of your forehead (this gives you an added level of concentration).

Continue this way, chanting each syllable out loud in full voice for two minutes.

Next, whisper the syllables as you continue the hand motions for two minutes.

Then repeat the sounds silently as you continue the hand motions for four minutes.

Return to whispering the syllables (while continuing to do the hand motions) for two minutes.

Finally, resume singing the syllables out loud for the final two minutes.

At the end of the twelve-minute cycle, finish up by raising your arms over your head as you take a deep breath in, and then exhale as you let your arms sweep out and down to return to your lap.
